17,000 Is the Magic Number

Speaking to your child is clearly beneficial. But, a device to count and analyze the words is a little over the top (notice there is even special clothing). I would feel a little like robot mommy and would probably take it hard if I didn't make the quota :). And what if the device deemed the types of words I used unacceptable? The LENA system is $399 (regularly priced at $699!)! And, the overalls with the special pocket are pricey at $32+ a pair. What do you think?

Hi Angela, I saw this article! I realized I had better talk out loud more because living alone all these years I think too much ;-) Miss Alexa needs me to think out loud, I think.... Thanks for sharing!

That is interesting. I guess it was good that Sean loved loved books as a lil guy. We REad a lot of books. I also talk A LOT. I must have said "Pure hell" a lot since that is how he described his time in the Steinmart linen department. :)
HA!

I would NOT buy a device that measured my words though. I stop at that.
We sang and talked a lot (I think) It's hard to remember.

Stimulation is so important, I also attended a seminar given by "Reach Out and Read" - they also enforced how much important is reading and talking to our children and those children who are read to daily (at least 3 times/week for at least 20 min/day) how much better they will do in school as compare to children who are not read to when they are toddlers.
I am not impressed with that device either, I think I would find better ways to spend my money than counting my words!
I just read your previous post, I thought the blog is our private place where we can say or express any feelings and share what ever we want. My blog is not even password protected....those people who called your agency did not do any better than school kids when they talk to their teacher whatever happens in the classroom! Dont they have better things to do?

My first thought was, "I didn't realize Angela was such a talker. If 17k is the magic number, she must have used at least 75k/day on Luca!" :-)

No, I wouldn't go out and buy a counter, but I admit, I'm feeling the pressure. I was driving Gigi to school today and thought, "This is a perfect opportunity to just talk to her, but... um... what do I say?" So I just started blabbing. "It's so nice it's spring. Today is Friday. The buds are coming out on the trees. The road is bumpy here." LOL!!

Now I'm paranoid that I'm stunting her growth because I'm not a big talker. Ahh!!

Nope, definitely not into a counter. I would be seriously below the quota each day. :)

It was interesting to hear because I don't think many people think that wee little ones need to be talked to all the time. I guess I didn't think about that. I wouldn't buy the device though. I do love to talk, read, sing....so I will try my best when we have our little one.

I'm glad you shared that - great subject!

Boy, someone is always out to make a buck off of any new research findings. I'd say don't spend the money, but do something else to remind yourself every day to talk out loud to your kiddos. Maybe put a task on your Outlook calendar, or hide little post-its in places where you will find them, and definitely have a nightly reading routine.
