Thoughts? Anyone? I ordered one set of 3 in silver. Should we get an additional carry-on? Most people I have seen have taken 3 bags. Is this correct?
I am getting stuff done today! I also bought some balloons to go along with the stacking cups. All we need is a blow-up beach ball and I believe we are done with toys. Wow. How did that happen? DONE with something?

Way to go girl.. you are on the ball...toys are done, suitcases are ordered... jeez... people like me can't keep up!!! I hope people tell you how many bags they carried. I think that is one of my biggest fears. The cost of the luggage. My mom just visited and she was only allowed one checked bag. Had to pay $25 for each additional. UGH...
We haven't traveled yet! But we have 2 light weight duffel bags on wheels, one hard-sided light weight Samsonite suitcase, also on wheels. Each of us is bringing a carry-on. In addition to that I'm using a diaper bag as my purse and Pat has a laptop backpack. Coming back from Kaz add one baby in a Ergo :)
LOVE that lightweight luggage! And I'm jealous too. Especially since my LOI "should" be here within days....
I'm still struggling with luggage. My plan is one checked bag, one carry-on, one laptop backpack. Joys of traveling solo. And they weigh quite a bit empty. Even if I break down and buy some that weigh a little less, I think I'll still be paying extra fees.
That luggage looks great! Keep in mind that you have to load and unload your own luggage on the YAK, so pack as light and as few bags as possible!!! Glad to hear things are coming together ...

I still neeed to decide about luggage. Our luggage is old-but it would work. I just almost hate to buy anythign else at this point-i've spent so much.
you can get beach balls at the dollar store. and balloons too. :)
they don't charge for the checked bags on international flights right now, at least not for the first bag...
oh, you may want those bags that squeeze the air out of everything.

I've heard good things about Heys - they are based here in Toronto - and we considered them when buying our luggage. Until our Kaz trip, we were carry-on-only people, even for long trips like a month in Turkey. So much so that we didn't even own luggage larger than carry on size. We just prefer to travel light - very light. But with a child on the way we decided our carry on days might be over, at least for a while anyway. So we went luggage shopping. We ended up with 24 inch expandable Briggs & Riley suitcases. Very expensive but guaranteed for life. For Kaz, we each checked a 24 inch suitcase and also took the maximum size carry-on allowed for Lufthansa. That made 4 cases in total; 2 x 24 inch checked cases plus 2 carry ons. We were packed pretty tightly on the way home but that included winter boots and heavy parkas.
I'm interested to know how you end up liking the Heys.
One positive about the time required in Kaz is that it gives you plenty of opportunity to learn about your child's beginnings and to record about their country and history for their life book. I hope that will help with a sense of self as our child gets older. Three cheers for stacking cups! They just love them. As for luggage... We threw non breakable clothes in a giant duffle bag that weighed next to nothing. We also compressed the clothes in those the bags where you suck out the air and it saves a lot of space. With our other suitcases, our overage fee was only 1200 tenge (about $10)- well, that was with some behind the scenes action, too. We can buy anything here in Kostanai. The only thing I would focus on for sure is the medications because they like to treat things herbally here. Even so, you can buy ibuprofen etc in the pharmacies. I would also focus on entertainment because TV is not in English. Also getting the right plug adapters and setting up phone communication BEFORE you go are important. We have had trouble with these things here. If you need advice, e-mail us. Chris will fill you in. You are sounding like you are getting prepared though and that is so important to have as much as you can ready for when you get called. The few days that you have before travel will be left with last minutes things to take care of. Tricia

So well prepared! I got charged on the first trip $50 for overweight luggage but made it back safely with no charges - perhaps because I used most of what I brought ;-) Also, both trips there my luggage got searched so be ready for that.

Sorry to be a negative nellie, but PLEASE PLEASE do not take latex ballons for your baby to play with. They are one of the most dangerous choking hazards you can find. If the ballon pops and the baby gets some of the balloon in their mouth they can suffocate right in front of you because if you do CPR the balloon will strech back and forth with your breaths. The beach ball is a great substitute.
I second what Jodi said, remember the YAK. It is like climbing the stairs on the big slide at the park, straight up. Also before you even get to the Yak you have to take your luggage down load it on a commuter bus to take you out to the plane then you unload there and reload to the plane. We took 1 rolling duffle bag and 1 back pack each. You will find most everything you need when you get there. Good luck packing it is exciting isn't it.

you can find beach ball at any dollar store. Glad you are ready. I dont think I can give advices in packing since always when I leave somewhere I bring too many things with me and I end up not using everything. You are very lucky to travel during summer, this should help a lot.
We had 2 big luggage and 2 small plus 2 carry ons, including the lap top and the video camera which i lost 10 minutes after I arrived in Amaty. we did not buy anything new or fancy.
Good job! Something accomplished-it must feel great. Hopefully you'll be lugging that luggage to the airport soon!!

In defense, 1 whole check-in was gifts for the care givers and baby house donations. There was another whole check-in worth of stuff that was totally wasted- food stuffs, travel toilet paper, purell, etc. Just the little junks.
If I ever get to go back to Petro, I'm sure we'll cut our luggage in half (or close to it), and my motto will be, "If I don't use it here, I'm not going to take it there." Seems simple, but when everyone told me that I should bring snacks, peanut butter, vitamins, Clorox wipes, etc. I listened. After all, they had been to Kaz (though not necessarily Petro), and I hadn't. But... in reality, I don't use any of that stuff at home!! It was perfectly silly for me to carry that kind of stuff over there "just in case." (Medicines are the exception to the "just in case" rule.)
